Lighting plays a huge role in how we feel and interact with a space. To achieve the perfect vibe in any specific room there are different types of lighting that work together to create the feeling you are looking for.
AMBIENT LIGHTING
Ambient lighting, also called general lighting, provides lighting throughout the room, often creating a mood and lighting a space uniformly, apart from any special lighting. The fixture most associated with ambient lighting is a chandelier.
TASK LIGHTING
Task lighting provides increased light for specific tasks in a room that may already have some ambient light. This direct, intense illumination is ideal for detailed task work, such as reading and writing at a desk, grooming, and preparing food. Sconces, floor lamps and task lamps are best used for this type of lighting.
ACCENT LIGHTING
Accent lighting draws attention to a particular object, such as artwork, sculpture, plants or bookcases. Accent lighting is often used outdoors, to highlight a beautiful tree, plant or water feature, or to draw the eye to a particular area of the landscape. Sconces or picture lights are fantastic ways to use accent lighting in a space.
A great example of using layered lighting effectively can be seen throughout the 2024 RUE Showhouse featuring lighting by Regina Andrew.

“The impact that lighting has on a room isn’t immediately obvious, but it creates a lot of mood. And it’s layering that does that. It isn’t until someone points out there are three light sources in a room, all serving different purposes, that it makes sense.” says Carla Zarjac. Carla and her husband James Slaven are the founders of Detroit based luxury lighting company, Regina Andrew. Lighting at Regina Andrew isn’t just practical, it is an art form and a way to bring self-expression into a space. Always seeking to create something unique, Regina Andrew seeks to electrify the room in bold new ways. Their new introductions for the seasons are available now on their website reginaandrew.com.
