    O.T. Sherrill and Buddy Sherrill

For eight decades, Sherrill Furniture has been at the heart of American design, creating finely crafted, custom-made furnishings that stand as a testament to artistry, quality, and innovation. Founded in 1945 by Oscar Truman “O.T.” Sherrill in Hickory, North Carolina, the company began as the Sherrill Upholstering Company. Guided by O.T.’s belief in careful craftsmanship, modest growth, and independence, the brand quickly distinguished itself within the modern furniture industry.

From the beginning, O.T. prioritized skill and reputation over rapid expansion—never borrowing money, but instead building trust through integrity and quality. His son, Buddy Sherrill, returned from military service in the Army Air Corps after World War II to join the family business. By the 1950s, as postwar America flourished with new homes and a growing demand for furniture, Buddy perfected upholstery techniques alongside his father, helping the company grow while upholding its dedication to excellence.

This commitment to craftsmanship became Sherrill’s hallmark. For decades, artisans in Hickory have meticulously hand-built each piece of furniture, bench-made with a combination of traditional methods and modern design. Buddy often remarked, “Good companies are all about the people,” and that philosophy remains deeply embedded in the company’s culture.

Today, Sherrill Furniture is led by Charles Sherrill, the third generation of the family to guide the company forward. With the fourth generation already beginning to take root, Sherrill continues to honor its founding principles while embracing innovation and design for the future.

What began as a small upholstery company has grown into a family of respected brands, including Sherrill Furniture®, Hickory White®, Sherrill Occasional®, Precedent®, MotionCraft®, Whittemore-Sherrill™, Lillian August® for Hickory White®, and Mr. & Mrs. Howard for Sherrill Furniture®. Together, these brands serve leading retailers, interior designers, and trade professionals across the United States and Canada – offering high-end collections that balance timeless elegance with modern sensibilities.

For Sherrill, the anniversary is more than a number; it is a celebration of family, craftsmanship, and community. From O.T.’s early vision to Charles’s modern leadership, the company has stayed true to its roots while continuing to innovate. As Sherrill enters its ninth decade, it stands as an authentic example of American-made excellence and proof that true craftsmanship never goes out of style.
