A penthouse is just a penthouse until it becomes a showcase of visual excellence. Sought out for her vibrant style and eclectic talent, interior designer Perla Lichi was commissioned to finesse one couple’s 3,800-square-foot home at One Island Place in Aventura, Fla., arming it with the color of royalty. “They loved my unique design style and the way I put colors together. We hit it off right away,” the designer says. It all started with a hint of purple in a Versace butterfly accent pillow, a little jewel that became the inspiration for an irresistibly chic backdrop. “I call the home ‘Fifty Shades of Purple,’” Lichi says.

While each space presents its own curated collection of striking surprises, continuity pervades the home with a seamless flow of white Calacatta porcelain tile flooring that possesses a reflective mirror-like quality. Choosing to keep the existing mahogany crown molding, Lichi glamorized it by coating the dentil molding with a silver-leaf finish.
One of the main features of the home is the bar area, where an amethyst wall resides. Purple striations and swirls glimmer while illuminating the space through a translucent material. “I wanted it to look like a giant jewel that lights up the room,” Lichi says. The bar is topped with polished white crystalline stone and faced in shimmering faux leather with a snakeskin texture. Diamond-tufted, high back chairs are swathed in a soft velvet that casts an iridescent effect from the violet reflection of the feature wall.

In the dining area, ribbons of Murano glass flown in from Italy — the clients’ own chandelier that could not be left out — draw the eyes up and around the space. “It’s like jewelry that adds a little more glam,” the designer says.

Filled with vivacious color, brilliance and stunning ocean views, the living area is a place to stop and stare. Bold purple velvet club chairs have a modern appeal with the Greek key pattern of polished nickel arms that exude the epitome of glamour. A sculptural Lucite accent table centers the chairs, while a beautiful Murano glass chandelier with amethyst glass and crystals is a statement piece that is so compelling it cannot be ignored. This grouping is accentuated by a hand-tufted, wool and silk area rug with five shades of purple, whites and grays fused together forming a damask pattern.

Nearby, a separate sitting area offers some seclusion without breaking the flow of design or disrupting the ocean views. Here, a tufted velvet sofa is so luxurious, it beckons relaxation.
In the private spaces, the master bedroom is toned down with soft shades of mauve, pink and eggplant to radiate a sleek and modern aesthetic. A white tufted bed centers the space, while the cabinet’s silver-leaf sunbursts surprise and the curvy chrome styling of the high back chairs add a dimension of reflectivity. “It’s a very sensuous look,” Lichi says. “One that flows throughout this home that is filled with happiness and bountiful color.”
