When designer Sherrill Canet was tapped to design the North Palm Beach vacation residence of two longtime clients of hers, trust between the parties made the project all that much smoother.
“These homeowners and I go back for 20 years,” says Canet. “My first job for them was a very grand, new house with the architect Oliver Cope in Oyster Bay, New York, and over the years I’ve worked for them again and for many of their family members. We’ve had a long design journey together, so they have full confidence in me, and that’s wonderful because they know to expect the outcome to be cohesive, considered, and intentional.”
That was certainly the case this time around with the design overhaul of a 6,000-square-foot house in the private golf community of Lost Tree.
“My goal for this vacation home was for it to be completely different from their primary dwelling,” says Canet. “Above all, I wanted it to feel light, airy, and happy.”
That all began with the palette, a mix of blue shades that nod to the ocean. “You know that there is not one blue room in their home up north,” says the designer. “But this is Florida, so we established the blue palette from the exterior, where you can first see it on the window shutters, and then carried it inside. The color felt appropriate for the house, the location, the architecture, and the landscape.”
The design team then turned their attention to texture. “We decided to tell the material story of the house with natural stone,” says Canet. “The foyer is accented with marble in a checkerboard pattern, and the flooring through the rest of the house is a smooth limestone with a soft and dreamy flow.”
In terms of furniture, the approach is a timeless mix. “We incorporated a few key vintage pieces and juxtaposed them with modern furnishings,” reveals Canet. “In a coastal area such as this, I wanted the vibes to be casual and calm, yet still elegant.”
Now complete, the finished residence boasts the bright, airy, and undeniably coastal feel Canet and her clients were so determined to capture.
“It was a lovely transformation, and the owners were thrilled with the outcome,” says Canet. “The house has a playful spirit, and that was my intention from the start.”
