The busy souks of Marrakesh and Cycladic architecture of the Greek isles inspired Melanie Turner to create a 4,500-square-foot home defined by the signature charm of those locations—and it shows. Here, the Atlanta designer reveals how she achieved that delightful mix.
The Moroccan influences in this residence are impossible to miss, but then we turn a corner and we’re in Greece. What’s the story there?
The homeowners have always loved Morocco, so we pulled inspiration from the country’s rich textures and bold details, and blended it with the crisp, breezy ease of Greek Mediterranean style to create something layered, fresh, and unexpected.
Was that what the clients wanted, or did you completely surprise them?
Sort of. They wanted a beach house that felt like a true escape—creative, one-of-a-kind, and full of personality. They envisioned something with a resort-like ease, perfect for hosting beach parties, gathering friends, and entertaining in style.
“Creative, one-of-a-kind, and full of personality” is exactly what this residence is. What was your inspiration for it?
Those little moments when you’re tucked away somewhere in the world while traveling and the overall feel of Alys Beach. I wanted the space to feel fresh and modern but still grounded in something timeless and collected.
What was the overall approach to palette?
The palette was inspired by Greece, so it’s marked by crisp, sun-washed whites, the deep blues of the Aegean, and a golden yellow glow that feels like sunshine on stone. It’s fresh, vibrant, and full of life—just like a perfect day by the sea.
What textures did you rely on?
With wet bathing suits and sandy feet in mind, we leaned into durable textures and hardworking performance fabrics because a beach house should be as livable as it is beautiful.
There are so many beautiful accessories all over the home, from carved doors to lanterns. Where did you source from?
I took a buying trip to Morocco just for this project, and every lantern and light fixture came straight from the souks. I wanted the home to feel authentic, collected, and beautifully layered.
In terms of furnishings, what brands did you rely on and why?
A lot of the furnishings in the home were custom designed. We worked with Bjork Studio on all the upholstery, wrapping nearly everything in performance fabrics from Perennials to keep things beautiful and beach-friendly. And in the living room, we brought in a bold touch with a sculptural Kelly Wearstler coffee table to ground the space and add a little edge.
What was the most challenging aspect of this project?
All the custom work. From the furnishings to the finishes—and even much of the construction—every detail was designed specifically for this home. It took extra time, but that’s what makes it special.
What was the homeowners’ reaction to the finished home?
They were absolutely delighted. The home is the oasis they’ve always dreamed of.
