A first-rate location is real estate’s most important asset—especially when you’re building from scratch. Just ask Walt and Sandra Chancey. When the architect and designer found the ideal lot on which to build their Alys Beach vacation house, they purchased it without hesitation. In this desired area, spots adjacent to the Turtle Bale Green sculpture park and zoned so you can erect a 6,337-square-foot structure high enough to boast a tower and views of the town and the Gulf are not easy to come by.
“The connection to the public space and the view opportunities from a fourth level sealed the deal,” says Walt, who’s also a developer. “Our spot is unlike any other.”
The picturesque locale also inspired the interior design. “We incorporated a French seaside aesthetic through the use of curved walls and ceiling details,” says Sandra. “And we stuck to an all-white palette that would not compete with the views of the community’s architecture and greenery.”
The furnishings chosen (from brands as diverse as RH, Pierre Augustin Rose, and Ligne Roset) also reflect those exterior views with pieces marked by sculptural, flowing, and undulating lines that echo the shape of the bronze turtle figures just outside the window.
“We achieved what we wanted, and we’re happy with the result,” says Walt. “Alys Beach is a special place and so is this home.”
