Turnkey Tactics Shine in Naples Winter Retreat

At Mediterra in Naples, a resolute designer executes the vacation home of a Chicago couple down to the very last details

A trustworthy real estate pro on your corner is everything when it comes to the vacation home hunt. Midwesterners David and Lori Oestermeyer discovered this firsthand when they set out to find a Naples winter retreat. After multiple site visits, the husband and wife returned to Chicago without any prospects. But when Lori learned of a 3,000-square-foot new build in the Mediterra private community, she asked their Realtor to investigate. The agent came back with good news. “She told us: ‘it’s exactly what you’re looking for,’” says Lori. “We basically bought the place sight unseen.”

The real estate broker also proved her worth when she recommended the ideal interior designer to transform the house: Sherie Weidner of Clive Daniel Home. “We knew from the first call that Sherie was the right choice,” says Lori. “Part of that was her background and the other part was her assurance that we would be involved in the design process, and that everything would be done by the time we moved in.”

As the couple had already selected many of the finishes before her involvement (including white oak flooring for the main traffic areas and white cabinetry against a marble mosaic backsplash in the kitchen), Weidner concentrated on accents, fixtures, and furnishings. “They told me very clearly that they wanted color, color, color, and visual interest,” says the designer. “They didn’t want it to look like anybody else’s home.”

Weidner went to work on a plan after scouring all 85,000 square feet of the Clive Daniel Home showroom in Naples and presented it to the homeowners when they returned to Florida. After that, they all headed to the showroom, where Lori and David were able to see and touch samples of all the furnishings and finishes Weidner had proposed. There, the designer also led them through a virtual presentation that detailed how the layouts and space planning would work from room to room. Satisfied, the couple flew back to Chicago and Weidner waited for construction to finish so she could begin the installation work.

And work there was. In the bar, the design team opted for blue-gray cabinets and a Carrara marble backsplash to complement the one in the kitchen. In the great room ceiling, beams were installed to match the mahogany front door. A metal-and-glass door was custom ordered from Hope Windows and then used as an eye-catching separation between the study and main living area. Because the Oestermeyers mentioned that the study would sometimes be used as a guest bedroom, a blackout overhead shade for total privacy was incorporated. Then came the furniture and, shortly thereafter, all the “color, color, color” the homeowners had requested in the form of pillows, rugs, drapery, wallcoverings, and bedding.

To say Weidner was meticulously involved in the project is an understatement. As the day of the big reveal approached, she herself steamed the linens, made the beds, hung the art, and set the table. “I like to do this with every house that I finish,” she says. “That way, when the homeowners arrive, they can simply drop their bags and start living.”
