Naples Home Exudes Metropolitan Sophistication

Design West delivers cosmopolitan elegance in a Talis Park vacation home with a New York state of mind

When a New York couple imagined their dream Florida getaway, they envisioned interiors that would share the edgy, fashion-forward essence of their Manhattan address. As they built that home in the country club community known as Talis Park, they turned to Design West to turn that reverie into reality. Expectations were high, to say the least.

“They’re a very successful couple with two very dynamic personalities,” says Glenn Midnet, Design West’s president and founder. “He is a captain of industry. She is a very successful person in her own right. From the way she dressed, you could tell she has impeccable taste. Fashion is not just for the runway. It’s also for the home. And because she understood that, she gave us a lot of input along the way and drove a lot of the decisions.”

The goal was to get away from city life, not a city look. After Midnet and his design team met with the couple to understand their lifestyle and habits, they drew style inspiration from tropical resorts and sophisticated homes in New York City and the Hamptons. Based on that, they conjured a custom look that was high-contrast and cosmopolitan, yet soft and coastal at the same time.

“We create designs that are unique to every client,” says Midnet. “We want them to be cohesive and practical as well as beautiful. The best designs come when people plan far enough in advance and architect, builder, and designer are working in tandem, thinking things through as they create. You want a true collaboration.”

Also crucial is attention to detail, which Design West ensured by coming in at the construction stage to install soft recessed lighting in the living room, master bedroom, and bathroom with the objective of providing a warm glow in those spaces while highlighting some of the textures within them.

Custom fabrics, furniture, and wow-factor fixtures, such as the seven-foot-tall, five-foot-wide Terzani chandelier in the living room, create drama amidst the clean symmetry of every room. Some of the spaces are designed around these show-stopping elements, which anchor the square footage and provide visual interest. Metal details, chrome finishes, and crystal or glass features provide the airy residence with hard edges, while velvety fabrics, animal prints, and natural elements such as mother-of-pearl soften those lines. By weaving these details together throughout the home, Midnet and his team were able to create a cohesive design that’s as dynamic as the clients themselves.  Think feminine curves meets sharp elbows.

“This was a really fun exercise, blending together elements that seemed like they were directly opposite to each other,” says Midnet. “It was a combination of the masculine and feminine, and it came together in a balanced way.”

Light dances off the shimmering surfaces or is filtered through gauzy draperies for a look that is dazzling and relaxing all at once. Although the home has beautiful views of the pool, palms, and golf course, the couple did not want the interior color scheme to be beachy. Neutral hues such as gray, black, and cream provide cool elegance in spaces such as the living room and dining room, while pale colors such as sea green invoke tranquility in the 11,000-square-foot home’s five bedrooms.

“We wanted each of the bedrooms to feel different, so each one has their own color palette and textures,” says Midnet. “Guests get their own little slice of paradise.”

After the clients signed off on the six-month design phase, the hands-on work took a year to complete. For both homeowners and design firm, the extra time was worth it.

“We really drilled deep to understand the client’s vision,” says Midnet. “When it came time to reveal the end result, they were really blown away.”
