Every interior designer carries an arsenal of stories from projects past. For Janine Blume and Beth Walker-Fenton of Jinx McDonald Interior Designs, one of the most memorable involves a sourcing excursion to Schumacher with their client, Laurie Roche.
“We must have been there for hours, and Laurie absolutely loved it,” Blume recalls. “It’s always nice having clients with us when we’re pulling swatches and fabrics because hearing them say, ‘I love this’ or ‘I don’t like that,’ helps us tell their story.”
Laurie first met the duo after a Google search led her to the award-winning design firm, and she was so impressed following their initial meeting, that she enlisted them to overhaul the 9,750-square-foot, three-story residence that she shares with her husband, Jay, and their family. Located on Hideaway Beach in Marco Island, the sprawling house felt outdated, so the Roches requested a removal of all Tuscan-inspired finishes on the walls and ceilings, as well as a music room where Jay could play his guitars. Avid readers with an extensive collection of first editions, the couple also insisted on multiple inviting spots where they could curl up with a good book.
A former floral designer, Laurie brought her keen eye for color and composition to the project, especially when it came to selecting paints, fabrics, and wallcoverings. She envisioned interiors with a touch of whimsy, grounded in a harmonious blend of verdant greens and gentle blues to channel the home’s beachside setting. Blume and Walker-Fenton were gladly onboard with that vision.
When deciding on the overall palette, a pair of Thibaut lumbar pillows covered in a botanical print set the tone for an airy, layered mix of soft-spectrum blues, apple green, and ivory. These shades were carried throughout the living spaces to create a cohesive flow, complemented by wallcoverings in varied prints and motifs. Wide-plank European white oak flooring, laid in both straight runs and classic herringbone patterns, adds warmth and visual continuity underfoot.
In the great room, the transformation began with removing the dated precast concrete fireplace façade and an old-fashioned built-in. In their place, a striking seafoam-green Evoa quartzite fireplace surround was installed to complement an original artwork by Wesley Webber decorously displayed above. Framed with refined moldings, a classic mantel, and architectural columns, the new focal point exudes timeless elegance. To its right, 18-foot, floor-to-ceiling bookcases, detailed with intricate moldings and medallions, display a curated selection from the couple’s book collection. Nearby, an Old Biscayne Designs cocktail table—painted to match the azure accent pillows and mirror the coffered octagonal ceiling overhead—anchors the seating arrangement, while a slim console tucked behind a sofa discreetly conceals a TV lift.
Beyond the books and through a pair of arched French doors, the music room is wrapped in a white-and-pastel-green Anna French wallpaper, echoed on toss pillows to subtly tie the space together. “Jay is not afraid of color, so he let us have some fun in there,” says Blume. “We pulled tones from the wallpaper and that became our inspiration. We just kept layering shades, and that’s why the room has such a nice vibe.”
While they kept the kitchen’s footprint intact, the designers did perform several updates, including refinishing the cabinetry and installing Taj Mahal quartzite countertops that rise into a full-height backsplash. A custom hood by Refined Carpentry, accented with wood banding that matches the upper glass-front cabinets, replaced the bulky original, while nickel gap cladding on the domed ceiling lends architectural definition.
The couple’s primary bedroom, located on the third floor alongside a guest room and flex space, was conceived as a relaxing retreat with distinct zones for sleeping and lingering, separated by a subtle step to define each space. Boasting a subdued color scheme, the suite’s design fully embodies its restful ambiance. Just beyond, a Zen-imbued bathroom offers a dreamy refuge, ideal for unwinding and disconnecting from the outside world.
Although renovating the decades-old home presented inevitable challenges, the Jinx McDonald team met each one with creative solutions and an unwavering commitment to excellence.
“Beth and Janine were nothing short of spectacular,” says Jay. “They treated the home as if it was their own, always striving to find that perfect piece for the perfect spot. We’ve worked with other designers before, but this was by far the best experience we’ve ever had.”
