when a florida couple decided to build their dream beachside home on the Gulf Coast, they opted for one of Naples’ private communities. Located near Vanderbilt Beach, the 9,300-square-foot residence was custom-tailored by Lana Knapp, a savvy interior designer in Bonita Springs who had worked with the family before.
“What I liked the most was how open the clients were to using new materials and embrace new design ideas for this project,” says Knapp, senior designer at Collins Dupont Design Group. “Their willingness to trust and accept the direction I had for this home allowed me the creative freedom to compose something uniquely special for them.”
Architecturally designed by Richard Guzman of R.G. Designs, the two-story structure—positioned to take in the splendid coastal views and neighboring lakes—includes 8,000 square feet of air-conditioned space, with an entire second floor reserved exclusively for guests. The dwelling encompasses a sweeping great room and a seamless floor plan with unobstructed sightlines into the kitchen, dining, and outdoor spaces. “The homeowners have lots of family, which was a critical component to the design of the house,” says Guzman. “We worked with the interior designer to finalize some of the room sizes to make sure the clients had sufficient space for their furnishings.”
Taking Guzman’s initial design, Knapp refined the floor plan to accommodate her clients’ request for a transitional-style home with modern elements. “I detailed the ceilings, designed the wall features, and kept the backgrounds minimalistic so this home could showcase the owners’ one-of-a-kind artworks,” she says. “It was intensive work but worth it.”
The grandeur of the great room sets a dynamic tone with its curated blend of traditional elements and modern design features. A vaulted 27-foot ceiling outfitted with stained beams and white tongue-and-groove details is brought to a livable level with dropped double beams that wrap around the room. In place of built-in cabinetry, triple pilasters with organic, vine-shaped wall sconces in handblown blue and clear glass compose a feature wall shared by a console table centered below the television. A fresh coastal palette inspired by natural seaglass scavenged by the homeowners on nearby beaches shimmers throughout the home in crystalline finishes and shades of cool blue tempered with crisp white.
In the kitchen, artistry meets functionality in a multi-purpose space designed for a chef. Its spacious open layout creates an effortless flow between the cooking, dining, and entertaining spaces, delineated by stained horizontal ceiling beams. Working closely with Knapp, the wife, a gourmet cook, leaned toward stylishly functional spaces where her family could also gather for holidays and special occasions. Double kitchen islands with dual sinks are visually balanced by a 60-inch Wolf professional gas range capped with a brilliant white eglomise hood.
Adjacent to this, a glamorous backlit wet bar and dining area generate rich contrast with warm walnut cabinetry accented by satin gold inset details and a custom 10-foot dining table that extends to 14 feet. Colored glassware and ambient lighting, emulating crystals, create a shimmering effect that bounces in every direction.
Just beyond the living area’s expansive sliding glass door, an outdoor oasis paves the way for alfresco entertaining amid a tropical modern aesthetic. “Properties in this area are very shallow,” notes Guzman, “hence the need for a reverse zero-corner slider between the great room and outdoor living area. It adds a dramatic feel while blending the spaces fluently.”
Touting its own view of the lavish landscape and pool, the home’s primary bedroom affords the owners their own private sanctuary. Bathed in natural light, seaglass blues, and muted neutrals, the suite radiates tranquility amidst a lofty vaulted ceiling and light European oak flooring anchored with a patterned silk rug.
“These homeowners have always had a strong sense of quality combined with a superior design aesthetic,” says Knapp. “This made our outcome effortlessly harmonious and allowed a trust between designer and clients—what I call the bones of an outstanding design collaboration.”
