Global Charisma Informs Designer’s Deering Bay Home

Inspired by travel and life experiences, a designer infuses timeless sophistication into her own Deering Bay residence in Coral Gables

“From the moment I stepped into this Deering Bay apartment, I fell in love with the views,” recalls Miami interior designer Adriana Hoyos, a tastemaker who knows a thing or two about stunning spaces after 30 years in the industry. A dream project for any designer, her new four-bedroom, five-bathroom residence, nestled into the mangroves of the southernmost section of Coral Gables, spans 3,288 square feet, making it spacious yet warmly inviting. Surrounded by green golf courses and vistas of Biscayne Bay, its 360-degree views afford every room a breathtaking perspective. “The serene, private setting feels like a retreat, and the golf course view, in particular, was a decisive factor in choosing this home,” adds Hoyos. “It offers a sense of peace and connection to nature that flows throughout the entire apartment.”

After acquiring the property, Hoyos transformed the space into a personal home inspired by her experiences and travels, while respecting the building’s Mediterranean DNA and transitional architecture. “I wanted to honor that while personalizing it through my own design,” she notes, “and balancing function, elegance, and comfort.” Among the main changes was a new floor plan to create better flow and movement between spaces, integrating the kitchen into the family areas and tailoring each room to its own purpose. The goal was to create a thoughtful, curated home, both inviting and personal.

With an astute eye for art as well as design, Hoyos fashioned a foyer that delivers a quietly bold introduction, setting the tone with textured wallpaper by Phillip Jeffries and an iconic piece by Italian artist Mario Matera. “I wanted guests to feel the transition from the outside world into a thoughtful and curated space,” she notes. The living room carries the same vibe, speaking to the timeless elegance of Chanel with its clarifying black-and-white palette and sinuous seating from Hoyos’ own LUA Collection elegantly anchored on a thick and sumptuous circular area rug. Not stopping there, the full-circle theme extends all the way to the ceiling with a tiered three-halo fixture in black metal. Far-reaching landscape views embrace the room, punctuated by Domingo Zapata’s emotionally powerful, neo-expressionistic interpretation of Picasso’s Guernica.

“What I enjoyed most was the process of transforming the apartment into something that truly reflects my life experiences and design philosophy,” notes the designer. “Every room balances comfort and sophistication, and together they tell a story through each art piece and design element.”

Intimately inviting, the jewel-box dining room showcases a black granite dining table, also from the LUA Collection, complemented by custom host chairs that nod to Chanel’s signature diamond-quilt pattern and pristine piping details. Oversized mirrors along the back wall draw in natural light, illuminating the space along with a pair of dazzling smoked-crystal pendant lights. Outside, a terrace blends fluidly with the surrounding scenery, offering a direct connection to nature. Contemporary outdoor furnishings, chosen for their comfort and durability, portray clean lines and neutral tones that complement the architecture and frame the landscape.

“My home is a mix of functionality and intimacy,” says Hoyos. “The open spaces allow for easy family gatherings, while the dining room and terrace are ideal for entertaining. I love to invite friends for a sunset drink on the terrace, where the views feel endless.”

The apartment’s dramatic transformation reflects the balance of function, style, and experiences that shape Hoyos’ approach to design. Admittedly, the moment everything came together—the textures, custom furniture, art, and natural light, all blending in harmony—was incredibly gratifying for her. “Walking through the finished space and seeing how it reflects both the architecture and my personal journey confirmed that this is not just a home,” she says. “It’s a statement of living beautifully and intentionally.”
