Warm winters, sparkling blue waters, and exhilarating sightlines stretching to the Miami mainland are just a few of the reasons that make Fisher Island one of the most exclusive residential communities in the country. Those qualities convinced a Southern California couple that the private community would make the ideal East Coast escape. A condo purchase later, they were on the phone with interior designer Shannon Palmer asking him to bring the residence to colorful life.
While the property’s architectural framework was already in place and required no structural alterations, the project was deeply rooted in a close, highly collaborative relationship with the homeowners. “The couple envisioned the residence as a fully immersive retreat, a place that offered a vibrant escape from the fast pace of daily life,” says Palmer. “From the outset, the goal was to create an environment that would feel layered, expressive, and enveloping—one that engages the senses from ceiling to floor while remaining intuitive and functional for everyday living.”
The clients’ affinity for unique, charismatic pieces merged fluently with Palmer’s emphasis on function-driven design, resulting in a home that is as livable as it is visually dynamic. A bold color palette sets the tone, anchored by invigorating shades of blue, fuchsia, and citrine, all thoughtfully balanced to create “cohesion rather than chaos,” notes the designer. “These hues were layered throughout the home to build depth and movement, allowing each space to feel both distinct and connected.”
Palmer’s innovative custom elements played a significant role in bringing the concept to life. The living room ceiling features a striking mural wallpaper, reminiscent of a kaleidoscopic composition that draws the eye upward and reinforces a sense of total immersion. Throughout the home, bespoke draperies, pillows, and tailored upholstery, all designed with luxurious high-end textiles, lend tactile richness and comfort. Sleek furnishings, meticulously curated and custom-designed, complement the layered aesthetic, alongside custom rugs that ground the spaces in mesmerizing color and pattern. A calculated mix of acrylic, wood, glass, and metal elements further enriches the visual layering, creating contrast and dimension without sacrificing harmony.
“Art also plays a central role in the design narrative,” adds Palmer, “with carefully selected pieces sourced from galleries and the client’s personal collection adding personality and cultural resonance throughout the home. Every detail—from furniture to finishes and wallpaper to lighting—coalesces into a holistic experience.”
Throughout the home, hallways and architectural niches are treated as design moments, featuring curated art and unique wallcoverings that refine this sense of layering and discovery as one moves throughout. Plush outdoor spaces echo the richness of the interiors while allowing the natural beauty of Fisher Island to shine.
“The owners use this residence as a true escape from the outside world—a home away from home where they can disconnect, recharge, and fully immerse themselves in their surroundings,” says Palmer. “Their genuine love of color, texture, and bold layering, along with their willingness to push boundaries, created an environment where creativity could truly flourish.”
