Miami interior designer Bea Pernia approaches each project as an opportunity to experiment with textures, contrasts, shapes, and colors to deliver timeless interiors that are both refined and organic. That approach to palette, natural materials, and sculptural forms was exactly what a homeowner wanted for his 2,730-square-foot residence at the Porto Vita complex in Aventura.
“His vision was to transform the home into a tranquil escape that would feel both elegant and inviting, as well as personal,” says Pernia. “He wanted the space to reflect serenity while introducing individuality through carefully curated art and distinctive accents of color.”
The finished residence is what Pernia calls an exercise in “refined organic modernism,” a look that’s sculptural, minimal, and grounded in natural materials like oak, marble, linen, and wool, with artworks, bespoke furnishings, and artisanal details that bring the depth and personality the client desired for the space.
To set the appropriate backdrop for the interiors, the design team opted for a neutral palette that revolves around beige, sand, ivory, and warm taupe, complemented by subtle accents in gray and bronze. “The tones employed were chosen to evoke serenity and balance, to create a space that feels both timeless and lived in,” says Pernia. “The neutral foundation allows the natural materials to speak effortlessly, while the soft infusions of color bring the personality and warmth that reflect the client’s individuality and the vibrancy of Miami’s natural light.”
Light played a most integral role in fact. In the area of the home that transitions from a hallway into the dining room, the flooring appears to be made up of two different tones of marble, caramel and gray, but that’s all a trick of the eye, an illusion caused by the way natural light moves across the space. The artificial lighting was designed to feel atmospheric and architectural, with integrated LED details within soffits, stone, and millwork to create an even glow.
In terms of furniture, Pernia curated a mix of custom pieces and selections from both American and European brands. “Each item was chosen for its sculptural quality and functionality,” says the designer. “The intention was to create harmony, where form, comfort, and craftsmanship coexist flawlessly.”
As far as ornamentation goes, accessories were selected for their texture, form, and connection to nature, “allowing each piece to complement the architecture rather than compete with it,” as Pernia puts it. Colorful glass brings energy to the neutral palette, while sinuous accents, organic ceramics, and metallic details create quiet moments of visual dimension that are in tune with the balanced atmosphere of the home.
“The key with this project was finding the right balance between restraint and expression,” says Pernia. “That’s why every decision, from proportion to finishes, had to be intentional and connected. It was about creating emotion through subtlety.”
