In Miami, a vibrant city with a tropical, amiable disposition, luxurious contemporary decor is best warmed with a cozy glow. The juxtaposition makes sophistication relatable and comfortable … and this Key Biscayne home across the bay is no exception. So, when one style-savvy couple wanted to set up house in this 3,800-square-foot home with a compact layout, an interior scheme of luxury made livable with warm and colorful accents — as well as an open floor plan designed to suit their family’s needs — topped their list of “must-haves.”
Not a problem as long as interior designer Luciana Fragali and her Miami-based team were on the job. “The couple wanted to have a big social area that would be connected, so the social areas would intermingle,” Fragali says. “To me it works like one large great room. Everything flows really well and all the spaces connect to each other.”
Elegant yet comfortable furnishings shape the spacious living area, where the juxtaposition of textures highlights the warm contemporary balance that grounds the space. Hand-woven of soft cotton blend and silky yarn, a Nahla area rug offers a soft underfoot feel with a low profile that is consistent with the neutral color palette throughout the home.
Nearby, the dining area coexists with an adjacent sitting area as there is virtually no boundary but an exquisite wood dining table and the 15-globe chandelier above that unequivocally assist in establishing its own identity and presence. A wall of floor-to-ceiling glass lines the overall space with views of the pool and lush greenery. In the sitting area, a round mirror provides a soft brightness to the room, allowing the tropical greenery outside to show its color inside. “With 11-foot-high ceilings, the house is filled with natural light,” Fragali says. “It’s really gorgeous.”
Texture balance continues in the kitchen, where white, neoprene chairs border a custom, marble-topped table. Whitewashed oak cabinetry lines the culinary space in perfect complement.
The master bedroom is a comfortable and cozy sanctuary further warmed by a wall of textures abutting the headboard. “We built the wall behind the bed with a wood lattice panel, and wallpaper on the top and bottom,” the designer says. “Color-wise, I wanted to go a little bit warmer, that’s why I used the armchairs in caramel.” Fragali kept bedcoverings simple and understated allowing her accent pieces to harmonize in the room in an uncluttered and tasteful way.
Throughout, the rooms flow to create a breathable and inviting living space. “This synchronization is purposed to make the home unique, consistent and flexible enough to accommodate entertaining as well as family living,” Fragali says.
