Vero Beach Family Home is a Blue Beauty

New York-based designer and television personality Libby Langdon doubles down on color in this Vero Beach home

In addition to enjoying their vacation home in the Florida Keys, one couple decided to fully embrace their Floridian footprint by purchasing a primary residence in Vero Beach. “I knew the owners through a recommendation to design their Islamorada vacation retreat,” interior designer, author, and home makeover television personality Libby Langdon says. “They were living in New Zealand at the time, so I created the design long distance…we emailed and spoke on the phone, but never met in person.”

Upon deciding to buy this 4,500-square-foot Vero Beach home, the couple once again turned to Langdon for her expertise—but this time they actually got to meet face-to-face. “The design process was so much fun working one-on-one with the homeowners,” Langdon says.

Family fun and function define the home’s interior, which is rich with details from floor to ceiling. “My clients envisioned fun fabrics, color, wallpaper, and bold patterns,” Langdon says. “We wanted it to have a sense of whimsy and feel like a super happy space.”

With only one chance to make a first impression, Langdon wanted the design of the home’s foyer to capture imagination from the get-go. A pair of ottomans is the jumping off point for the colorful space; a glazed linen console and a beaded chandelier offer pops of bold blue. The living room features a calm vibe, creating an inviting space for entertaining. A special grouping of the owners’ artwork and maps of the various places they have called home takes a place of prominence above the fireplace. “When it comes to artwork, there are no rules,” Langdon says. “It’s really all about living with what you love.”

Langdon opted to paint the kitchen island blue— contrasting with the cabinetry that surrounds it and echoing the blue tones from the pool area and the waterway. “It’s an opportunity to have some fun and infuse the heart of the home with some style,” Langdon says. Natural finishes on the dining table, banquette, counter stools, and chairs help to balance the color and bring warmth.

The focus in the family room was creating a cozy space to snuggle up, watch television, and play games. A comfy rug and cherished family photos make the room a place that family members of all ages love to spend time in.

Creativity and whimsy abound in Langdon’s design, and a powder room provides the perfect statement spot. “I encourage people to have fun in a powder room, go crazy with wallpaper, fun lighting, and fixtures,” Langdon says. That advice resonates in the children’s areas—where blue, red, yellow, and white work together for a seafarer look in the son’s room. “Pretty in Pink” colors the inspiration for the daughter’s room.

In the master suite—with its palette of icy blues, creamy hues, and touches of light gray and white—a sense of calm reigns. Langdon softened the high, angular wall with a seagrass wallpaper. A pair of tall coastal landscape paintings over the headboard provides balance. Color block drapes add interest to the window area and the blue and white patterned ottoman pulls the room’s overall scheme together.

Langdon says the key to her success in this project was not to make everything blend together, but to give each space its own personality. “I’m not a designer who thinks things all have to work together,” Langdon says. “I’m good with spaces that evoke emotion because you’ve used a cool combination of colors, patterns, and materials. To me, that’s what great design is all about.”
