Coastal Vero Beach Home Balances West Indies Flair

Designer form follows unique function in this spacious, coastal modern house that celebrates West Indies flavor within a practical and open floor plan

In an Island Village enclave of Vero Beach, this dwelling is where design meets functionality, adhering to both with no compromise in sight. Homeowners Jill and Peter Weise’s 6,200-square-foot house is accessible and uncluttered, but strays from starkly minimal, retaining an identity of a coastal modern aesthetic with undertones of West Indies design. “This balance is essential,” says Jill of the necessity to accommodate her sister-in-law, who utilizes a wheelchair and lives with the family.

“My favorite part of the project is how my design team and I were able to push the boundaries of a traditional floor plan,” interior designer Leah Muller says. “By minimizing and not removing architectural elements, by applying rich textures, mixed metals and seductive materials, we gave careful attention to accessibility and family purpose.”

Cameos of color pull the eye beyond black-and-white to an interior grounded with a subtle, neutral base. Striking that balance between simple yet nuanced, the foyer delivers a crescendo welcome. “We wanted a postmodern style in the entry,” Muller says. “We found this perfect, geometric black metal light fixture that wows as a sculptural element.”

Characterized by celebrated views of the waterway, a coastal presence is easily discernable throughout. In the living room, bold accents give a nod to the tropics, while pale blue and sandy hues wash over the dining room.

With a nod to homeowner Peter Weise’s German roots, the kitchen exudes a modern European aesthetic. Centering the fully open and linear space, a 16-foot-long Pompeii quartz island ensures that the area supports multi-functional use. It’s a prep station on one end, a casual table with easy access for all on the other.

“The powder room is everyone’s jewel box,” Muller says. “We scoured for the perfect vanity and paired it with a freeform white sink that oozes over the top of the stained, wood cabinet.” The undeniable organic nature of the space is a nuanced highlight.

Organic elements make an appearance in the music room. Artwork from the Weise’s collection perches atop the fireplace adorned with noncombustible, geometric white-glass tiles. “The artwork is a bit fanciful but in a modern aesthetic. The artist uses bright colors and presents a somewhat conceptual view of things,” Jill says. “The piece is of white poppies, so it’s a nice abstract that evokes whimsy.”

A bit of whimsy even taps the guest house, where a vaulted ceiling defines the master suite with island-style luxury. “It’s meant to be a retreat for our guests … a little bit of Florida fun and relaxation,” the homeowner says.

“We used a spa-green glass for a whisper of color in the homeowners’ master bath as well,” Muller says. “The floating cabinets are finished in a dark espresso hue for rich texture to complete the modernly spa-like space.”

Slightly more masculine, the upstairs media room is a youthfully daring and urban space for video game playing and general hanging out — a favorite for the Weise children. And speaking of gathering spaces, the outside loggia is the go-to place for family fun.

“The family’s frequent travels to Europe and affinity for postmodern design cemented the home’s final style,” the designer says. Practicality and style are not mutually exclusive in the Weise residence. They exist in a finely tuned balance that makes this a luxuriously livable home.
