Past an open staircase constructed of black iron and wood, the family room’s neutral sectional, with textured blue and white pillows, invites conversation. On the wall, simple white built-ins are backed with grass-cloth wallpaper to frame the TV set and display cherished accessories. A sculptural coffee table features a white oak top with a starburst pattern.

“This garden is in the middle Keys near an open bay,” says Craig Reynolds. “We raised the pool to avoid flooding during storms and we used poured concrete on the deck, which was designed in a very organic shape without sides. That’s a Native American chickee, not tiki, hut, which was installed in the center of the garden. And we used tall hurricane palms and coconut palms for an overall tropical feel.”

The great room holds a deft mix of old and new. The antique hewn bench and chair were sourced in Belgium, and the enormous planter was once a wine cask that hails from France. “The soulful saddle, which is owned by the client and was previously used on their horses, became a statement piece,” says designer Briggs Edward Solomon. “By placing it on a simple stand, we were able to showcase its significance and create a focal point in the room.”

Wabi-Sabi Elements Bring Organic Appeal

Potthast Design worked with Jamie Stern on a custom diamond-pattern area rug that provides an elegant platform for the great room’s furnishings. A white Yamaha baby grand piano pops against the green tropical landscape. Sumptuous seating, including a lavish built-in window seat, wraps the space in comfort. Old Biscayne’s two-tiered white cocktail table and a white-topped cane side table from Worlds Away connect visually to the piano’s silhouette.
