Former President Bill Clinton and First Lady Laura Bush have dined in this room.

A mirrored screen adds a reflective quality to the dining room, where two settings of tables and chairs create intimate seating. Silk taffeta from Brunschwig & Fils fashions the draperies and supports the room’s subdued scheme.

Because of the room’s lofty proportions, the designer scaled up the size of the canopy. “A king-sized bed looked lost in there,” Pranich says. He also created sitting areas for morning coffee or relaxing in the evening; an oversized sofa and nested tables compose a cozy reading spot opposite a wall of glass that lets in the ocean.

Pranich used color, lighting, scale and fabrics to match the interior design to the monumental breadth of the home’s history, size and guest list — all the while creating an appropriate residential design that is comfortable and inviting.
